    The Lenape Creation Story
According to Lenape mythology, before creation, there was only a vast, empty darkness.
Within this void existed Kishelamàkânk, the spirit of the Creator.
While in this emptiness, Kishelamàkânk fell asleep and dreamt of the world as we know it—
mountains, forests, animals, and humans. Upon awakening, he began to bring his dream into
    reality.
He first created helper spirits: the Grandfathers of the North, East, and West, and the
Grandmother of the South. Together, they formed the Earth as envisioned.
From a special tree they created, the first man emerged from its roots, and when the tree
bent down and touched the ground, the first woman sprang forth.
As time passed, conflicts arose among humans over a magical bear tooth, leading to wars
and divisions. To restore harmony, Kishelamàkânk sent a spirit named Nanapush.
Nanapush gathered the people, introduced the sacred pipe ceremony, and taught them to
    resolve disputes through peaceful means.

Later, a great flood threatened all life. Nanapush saved various animals by placing them on a
turtle’s back.
To create new land, animals attempted to dive into the waters to retrieve earth. The muskrat
succeeded, bringing up soil that was placed on the turtle’s back, forming what is now known
as Turtle Island.
Meaning and Message
This sacred creation story affirms the Lenape understanding of harmony, balance, and divine
vision. It reminds us that creation began not with violence, but with a dream—one that
brought forth all life through divine will.
Kishelamàkânk continues to live in the hearts of those who honor their ancestors, walk in
natural law, and remember the sacred dream of origin.
